The roadmap

  1. 1

Get the digital basics strongWeeks 1–3

    • Boolean algebra, K-maps, combinational and sequential circuits.
    • Flip-flops vs latches, counters, shift registers, FSM design (Moore and Mealy).
    • Setup and hold time, clock skew, metastability and synchronizers.
    • Practise drawing the circuit for any piece of logic before you write code.
  2. 2

    Learn synthesizable VerilogWeeks 3–6

    • always @(*) vs always @(posedge clk), blocking vs non-blocking, how latches get inferred.
    • Parameters, generate blocks, case/casez, reset styles (sync vs async).
    • Think in hardware: every line of RTL becomes gates and flip-flops.
    • Write a small testbench for everything you design.
  3. 3

    Design real blocksWeeks 6–10

    • FIFOs (sync and async), arbiters (round-robin, priority), clock dividers, debouncers.
    • Pipelining, handshakes (valid/ready) and back-pressure.
    • Clock domain crossing: 2-flop synchronizer, pulse synchronizer, async FIFO. See RTL design questions.
    • Low-power basics: clock gating and why it saves power.
  4. 4

Learn the flow after RTLWeeks 10–12

    • Lint (catching coding problems) and CDC checks.
    • Synthesis: what the tool does with your RTL, timing constraints (SDC basics).
    • Static timing analysis basics: setup/hold slack, critical path, how to fix timing.
    • Area, power and timing trade-offs.
  5. 5

Learn a bus protocol and a small processorWeeks 12–15

    • APB, then AHB or AXI basics: handshakes and timing diagrams.
    • UART, SPI and I2C controllers are classic fresher projects.
    • A simple RISC-V core (single-cycle or 5-stage pipeline) is a strong resume project.
  6. 6

Build your portfolio and applyWeeks 15+

    • GitHub: 2–3 finished designs, each with a testbench, waveforms and a short README with the block diagram.
    • If you can, run your design through Yosys or OpenLane and mention area and timing results.
    • Practise explaining your design out loud with the AI Interview Bot.
    • Apply to fresher jobs and ask for a referral.

Tools

Free tools to practise at home

EDA Playground (runs SystemVerilog and UVM simulators online, free sign-up), Icarus Verilog + GTKWave (simulate and see waveforms), Verilator (fast simulation and lint), Yosys (synthesis), OpenLane (full RTL-to-GDSII flow).

Industry tools (you will meet them at work)

Lint and CDC: SpyGlass or similar. Synthesis: Synopsys Design Compiler / Cadence Genus. Timing: PrimeTime / Tempus. Simulators: VCS, Xcelium, Questa.

Projects to put on your resume

Pick two or three and finish them well. A finished project you can explain beats five half-done ones. Put the code on GitHub with a short README and waveforms.

  1. Traffic-light or vending-machine FSMBeginner
Clear state diagram, Moore vs Mealy choice explained, full testbench.
  2. Synchronous FIFO with full/empty flagsBeginner
Parameterised depth and width; explain how you chose the depth.
  3. UART transmitter and receiverIntermediate
Baud-rate generator, start/stop bits, oversampling on the receiver side.
  4. Asynchronous FIFO for clock domain crossingIntermediate
Gray-code pointers and synchronizers; explain why binary pointers fail.
  5. Simple RISC-V coreAdvanced
Start single-cycle, then add a 5-stage pipeline with forwarding and hazard detection.
