The roadmap

  1. 1

Get the digital basics strongWeeks 1–3

    • Number systems, Boolean algebra, K-maps, combinational vs sequential logic.
    • Flip-flops, latches, counters, shift registers, FSMs (Moore and Mealy).
    • Setup and hold time, metastability, and why clock domain crossing (CDC) is risky.
    • Write small circuits in Verilog: mux, decoder, counter, FSM. Simulate them.
  2. 2

    Learn Verilog for verificationWeeks 3–5

    • Blocking vs non-blocking, event scheduling, race conditions.
    • Write simple testbenches: clock and reset generation, stimulus, self-checking with if/else.
    • Read waveforms comfortably. Debugging from waveforms is half the DV job.
  3. 3

    Learn SystemVerilogWeeks 5–9

    • Data types, dynamic and associative arrays, queues.
    • OOP: classes, inheritance, polymorphism, virtual methods.
    • Interfaces, modports and clocking blocks.
    • Constrained random: rand, constraints, solve-before and dist.
    • Functional coverage (covergroups, bins, cross) and assertions (SVA).
  4. 4

    Learn UVMWeeks 9–13

    • Components: driver, monitor, sequencer, agent, scoreboard, environment, test.
    • Phases, the factory, config_db, sequences and objections.
    • TLM ports and analysis ports; how the monitor sends data to the scoreboard.
    • Build one full UVM testbench yourself, end to end. See UVM interview questions.
  5. 5

Learn a protocol or twoWeeks 13–15

    • APB first (simple), then AHB or AXI basics.
    • UART, SPI and I2C are also common in fresher interviews.
    • Know the handshake signals and draw the timing diagram from memory.
  6. 6

Build your portfolio and applyWeeks 15+

    • GitHub: 2–3 finished verification projects with README, test plan and coverage report.
    • One-page resume: skills, projects with numbers (e.g. '95% functional coverage'), tools.
    • Practise answers out loud daily with the AI Interview Bot.
    • Apply to fresher jobs and ask for a referral.

Tools

Free tools to practise at home

EDA Playground (runs SystemVerilog and UVM simulators online, free sign-up), Icarus Verilog + GTKWave (simulate and see waveforms), Verilator (fast simulation and lint), Yosys (synthesis), OpenLane (full RTL-to-GDSII flow).

Industry tools (you will meet them at work)

Simulators: Synopsys VCS, Cadence Xcelium, Siemens Questa. Debug: Verdi or SimVision. Coverage and regression tools. You don't need them to start; companies train you.

Projects to put on your resume

Pick two or three and finish them well. A finished project you can explain beats five half-done ones. Put the code on GitHub with a short README and waveforms.

  1. Self-checking testbench for a synchronous FIFOBeginner
Random push/pop, a reference queue model, checks for full, empty, overflow and underflow.
  2. SystemVerilog class-based testbench for an ALUBeginner
Transaction class, generator, driver, monitor and scoreboard with constrained-random opcodes and coverage.
  3. UVM testbench for an APB slave (register block)Intermediate
Agent, sequences for read/write, scoreboard, coverage on addresses and response, a few SVA checks.
  4. UVM testbench for a UART or SPI controllerIntermediate
Verify baud rate or clock modes, framing and error cases; show the coverage report.
  5. Asynchronous FIFO with CDC checksAdvanced
Gray-code pointers, assertions on full/empty, random clock ratios between the two domains.
