What you doDesign or lay out analog blocks like amplifiers, references, ADCs, PLLs and memory circuits.
Main skillsDevice physics, circuit analysis, SPICE simulation, layout matching, DRC/LVS.
Fresher payAbout ₹5–9 LPA for analog/custom layout in the middle of the market; analog design pays more.

The roadmap

  1. 1

Get the device basics strongWeeks 1–3

    • Semiconductor physics: PN junctions and how a MOSFET works (regions, threshold, square law).
    • Small-signal models: transconductance, output resistance, gain.
    • Basic circuits: current mirrors, common-source, source follower, differential pair.
  2. 2

    Learn core analog circuitsWeeks 3–7

    • Op-amps: two-stage design, gain, bandwidth, phase margin and compensation.
    • Bandgap references, LDOs and biasing.
    • Data converters (ADC/DAC) and PLL building blocks at a high level.
    • Noise, mismatch and process/voltage/temperature (PVT) corners.
  3. 3

    Learn simulationWeeks 7–9

    • SPICE simulations: DC operating point, AC (gain/phase), transient and noise.
    • Corner and Monte Carlo simulations to check the design works across PVT and mismatch.
    • Read datasheets of real op-amps and compare with your design.
  4. 4

    Learn layoutWeeks 9–12

    • Layers and design rules (DRC), LVS and parasitic extraction.
    • Analog layout techniques: matching, common-centroid and interdigitated devices, dummy devices, guard rings.
    • Why layout changes performance: parasitics, IR drop and coupling.
    • Read our physical design questions for DRC, LVS, antenna and latch-up basics.
  5. 5

    Do a full design–layout loopWeeks 12–15

    • Design a block in the schematic, lay it out, run DRC and LVS, extract parasitics and re-simulate.
    • Compare pre-layout and post-layout results and explain the difference.
  6. 6

Build your portfolio and applyWeeks 15+

    • GitHub or a PDF portfolio: schematics, simulation plots, layout screenshots and DRC/LVS-clean results.
    • Be ready to derive gain and explain trade-offs on a whiteboard.
    • Look for analog design, analog layout and custom layout roles; layout roles often hire freshers and diploma holders.
    • Apply to fresher jobs and ask for a referral.

Tools

Free tools to practise at home

ngspice (circuit simulation), Xschem (schematics), Magic and KLayout (layout, DRC), Netgen (LVS), with the open SKY130 PDK.

Industry tools (you will meet them at work)

Schematic and layout: Cadence Virtuoso. Simulation: Spectre, HSPICE. Physical verification: Calibre, PVS. Extraction: StarRC, Quantus.

Projects to put on your resume

Pick two or three and finish them well. A finished project you can explain beats five half-done ones. Put the code on GitHub with a short README and waveforms.

  1. CMOS inverter and current mirror characterizationBeginner
Simulate DC, transient and mirror matching in ngspice; explain the curves.
  2. Two-stage op-ampIntermediate
Design for a target gain and bandwidth, add compensation, show phase margin across corners.
  3. Bandgap referenceIntermediate
Design a simple bandgap and show its output across temperature.
  4. Layout of a differential pair or op-ampIntermediate
Use common-centroid matching, guard rings and dummies; make it DRC and LVS clean in Magic or KLayout.
  5. Pre- vs post-layout comparisonAdvanced
Extract parasitics from your layout and compare performance with the schematic simulation.
